Cult Of Apophis Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
We are a Black Metal/Doom band based in Port Huron, MI, US that started January 1, 2013. We released our first demo, Murder House Demos Volume 1 on February 22, 2013.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?
A unique mixture of Black Metal (old and new school) mixed with Doom-y passages.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects and subjects the band explores with the music?
Dark Story Telling. Taking life and putting it into story form. Metaphorical Darkness.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Apophis is the name of a comet that is predicted to destroy the earth, which is something I fully support. Cult of Apophis would be a group that heralds the destruction of mankind, and earth. Apop was also an Egyptian god of the dead.

5. According to the bio, the band only started at the beginning of the year and you have already released a demo, what is it that motivates you to work faster than most bands that have just started?
We just clicked right away. We end up jamming for long periods of time, and a lot of what we play comes together very well for whatever reason. We currently have enough material for a second demo, and plans to release an EP before the end of the year. We've all been in bands that remained stagnant and collectively decided that we were going to hit the ground running with Cult of Apophis.

6. Has the band done any live shows or is this a studio project?
We've played 3 shows to date with many more planned in the near future.

7.Currently you are unsigned, are you looking  a label and if so what kind of label do you feel that would be a perfect fit for the music?
There's no huge rush for us to get signed, it would be nice for marketing and distribution purposes, but ideally we'd like to find a label that will encourage us to create what we want to create, not just what sells. Although, if Deathwish or Southern Lord showed interest I don't think any of us would oppose.
8. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
Ian is in a punk band called Dick Hickey, Andrew is setting up a depressive black metal band called Endling and Jeff is working with an as yet to be named Grindcore band. We've all been in other now-defunct bands as well.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Faster more aggressive black metal, heavier more crushing doom.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Andrew - Anti, Gnaw Their Tongues, Snailking, Winterfylleth, Woods of Ypres, Watain, Drudkh.
Jeff - oldschool 90s black metal and modern Doom
Ian - Mayhem and Om.
As far as what we listen outside of "band influences" we have such a HUGE wide range of stuff that we individually like and everyone brings a small piece of that into their playing and style.

11. Does Occultism play any role in your music?
To an extent, yes.

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
We're a band that doesn't shy away from a good (or to be honest a bad) beer. A couple of us are readers, a couple are artists.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Keep your eyes out for more from us in the VERY near future.
