Kult Interview

Answered by Thorns (Drums) and Tumulash (Vocals).

1) Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?
(Thorns) We're actually organizing shows here and there. We're actually focusing on the live performances since we believe it is still the best way to show people what a band is all about. We're not interested in
being everywhere and playing with everyone, we're just following our path.

2) Recently, you put out a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about it the musical direction it has taken and also how does it differ from past recordings?
(Thorns) I have to say we are very exciting about it cause it was a long time the first album was released. Unfortunately we had some line up problems as well as some issues in our private life that forced the band
to stop for almost 3 years. It was a lot, I can guarantee, especially if knowing the new songs were already written and ready to be recorded just before the forced break... but what can I say? Sometimes shit happens.
Anyway the new album is rawer, more powerful and sharp than the first full length called "Winds Of War". I can surely say this is what we wanted Kult should have sounded since a long time. I always thought the first album was too much clean and overproduced, sounding sometimes a bit out of context. This is Black Metal as it should be: raw, ugly and dirt.

3) What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores and also how would you describe your progress as songwriters  over the years?
(Tumulash) I joined the band when the process of songwriting for "Unleashed From Dismal Light" was already started so some lyrics was already written by Werewolf, the previous singer. Anyway I took part to composition writing some of the lyrics by my hand and, as I use to do with my other bands before, I let inspiration flow from different kind of situations and feelings. My lyrics are about very different kind of
topics. Someone is very personal and introspective about inner thoughts and feelings, others are more related to our dark side and about how it affects the band itself.

4) What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Kult?
(Thorns) I was not in the band when the name was chosen.. but as far as I remember the guys chose it simply because it is direct and also easy to remember. Very strong sounding as well. In opposite of mostly of the
people think, the correct pronunciation is not like the English word CULT but like the German or Serbian translation of the same word. You can pronounce KULT with the "closed sounding U".

5) What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
(Thorns) There were been many in our past but I can't say exactly which one was better than others... the only thing I can say is that a typical Kult show is wild and straight to the core like a fist in the face. We are a live band 100% so not that kind of musicians not moving that much being too focused on playing their own instruments. We play live to kick some ass exclusively.

6) What are the touring or show plans for the new album?
(Thorns) For the moment we only book single/double week-end shows but we're actually discussing with out label about a possible European tour next spring, but it will also depends on our personal stuff, you know.
We'll see.. time shall tell.

7) On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to the new album by fans of black metal?
(Thorns) I think it is still too early to talk about a worldwide reaction but of one thing I'm sure of judging from all the orders we already received: this is going to be good. We received several messages
about people quite happy to see us again on the road. We're quite excited of having a new album out as well, we'll try not to delude who's waiting for us since so long time.

8) Are there any other musical projects going on these days?
(Thorns) Yeah.. too many to be sincere. I'm actually Involved in Acherontas as drummer, as well as Frostmoon Eclipse, Deathrow and otherstuff I prefer not to reveal right now. Tumulash is actually playing in Tumulus Anmatus, Deathrow and another secret project he's sharing with me. For the other 2 guys Kult is the only band.

9) What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
(Thorns) Well, I really have no idea. Our guitarist and composer Kacele said to us a couple of weeks ago he's already working on some new riffs but to be honest I still have to listen to them before to make my own idea. Anyway quite sure nothing but old school groovy black metal the good way.

10) What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
(Thorns) Bands like Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Craft and Armagedda have had a proper role on the early days of the band. We always liked many kinds of Black Metal so from eastern slavonic style like Inferno, Silva Nigra
or The Stone, to the western cults like Inquisition or Judas Iscariot to mention a few. I can obviously say we're different guys now.. a lot of time has passed and we are also listening a lot of different stuff
nowadays but when we get the instruments and we play, the only music we want to play is this one. It seems time freezed if you have a listen to our new album and it is exactly what we wanted.

11) How would you describe your views on Satanism and Occultism?
(Thorns) I believe a magazine is not the right place to talk about such personal opinions and theories. Lyrics can reveal what we stand for so I recommend people who wants to know more just to have a read to the
booklet of the album so everyone can make his own opinion on them.

12) Outside of music what are some of your interests?
(Tumulash)
Everyone of us have a lot of interest outside the musical sphere. But we don't use to mix it together. Better to keep it separated because is the best way to keep doing both the right way. And after all when we're on stage or when we're writing some new material for the band, everything else is pointless.

13) Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
(Tumulash)
Thank you for your interest in Kult.
We are back, as we are unleashed from the dismal light!
