Widerwertig Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are three guys with three instruments. That means there is one instrument per guy (guitar, bass and drums, a very special constellation). We started making music four years ago and produced three albums, two of them are already available and one is in production and will be released in a few weeks. During the time in which we were writing our first album, we were two guys, but then a third guy appeared. Fortunately he has not disappeared until now.
2.How would you describe your musical sound?
We try to build up a dark atmosphere to destroy this atmosphere with other elements (punk, psychedelic, sparkling unicorn fights ...) in order to produce something bizarre. For us, it is important to mix very deep feelings with elements which might seem to not fit in totally.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Sometimes we take passages from books (burroughs, nietzsche, freud..), sometimes we could not resist the urge to write about meaningless philosophical topics. There are also songs we just tried to imitate animal sounds (dying pigs, screaming goats..) The new album will have no vocals.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Widerwertig?
It is a wordplay because in germany "widerwärtig" with the letter "ä" is the german word for "disgusting". "Wider" means something like "against" and "wertig" refers somehow to "values". We know it is not possible to be against social values, it is just a try to stand for a critical view on morality (the only problem is, the more you are outside, the more you are inside). Therefore you can´t reduce our philosophy to nihilism, but if you want to, you can reduce it to sparkling unicorns.
5.Has the band done any live shows or is this a studio project?
We had a few live shows in our area. Because of our upcoming album release we plan some other shows.
6.The new album came out on Negation Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
It is a recently founded label to support the local underground scene. There are a few other projects which release there, also some black metal projects like "Flagellant". The label has no focus on a specific genre.
7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
The eastern hemisphere seems to like our music, especially the chinese one. The russian black metal community has been teared apart into the ones who like us and the others who do not. today there is a big war between them and we hope no one gets hurt because of our music. In the future there will be another big war about if this statement is true or not.We would like to get more feedback from america, because there are great bands.
8.Are there any other musical projects besides this band?
In the past there was the project "miriquidi eremit", a mixture of post rock and punk. We also make music together in other constellations and perhaps there will be releases in the future. For example there will be a split beat tape from "cap farewell" and "onkel jutter king".
9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We will stick to our way of permutating our style slightly while we are always trying to approach our idea(l) of music.
10.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
The bands which influenced our music are still the bands we are listening to today. there are bands like "paysage d'hiver", "Gris", "Bone awl", "Porcupine Tree", "Pyramids", "Randy Newman", "Wu-Tang-Clan", "Beach House" and "Aphex Twin", the usual stuff.
11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Searching for food in trash cans, fighting homophobia, thinking about the structure of social existence, truck driving, physics. We also like to sleep in the woods and drink alcohol.
12.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
We like racoons and we hope to see some soon. There are not many in germany but they become more. And finally we want to thank god for all that oxygen in the air around, because without all that oxygen we believe we would probably suffocate very slowly which certainly would mean a painful death... We want thank you for your interest in our music and for this interview.
We apologzse that it took so long until we answered!
